Homestead Senior Care

When you get old, there comes a time you may not be able to care for yourself. This can cause quite a few problems for family members as they scramble to find a way to care for their aging loved ones. Indeed, one may find themselves in a care situation unexpectedly due to a brain stroke or injury. If you are a family member looking to find a way to care for aging family members, you are presented with only a few choices. You can look at having your loved one move in with you while you provide the care. This may or not be feasible depending on your own priorities and schedule and the level of care needed. You can put your loved on in some sort of senior care facility, something that has both pros and cons. Or you might want to consider looking at getting homestead senior care that comes to your home (or your loved one’s home) so they can live at home.

Now if you want to care for seniors yourself, there are a few things to know. Caring for the elderly is one of those jobs that just makes you feel good at the end of the day. You feel accomplished and you also feel this sense of joy in your heart from taking care of others. This job may entitle you to serve meals, clean, or just sit and talk with someone. From my experience in watching after elders, I have found that most of them just want some company. Maybe after you’ve helped them out by cleaning up their home for them or serving them food, you could just sit and talk with them.

First get to know them and become a good friend of theirs. Although they may not be your family, the elderly you take care will soon start to feel like family to you. You’ll find yourself wanting to visit with them on your days off and treating them as if they were a part of your family. Some activities you could do while watching over elderly are playing board games, watching movies, reading to them, or going on walks if they can get up and move around. Another idea is simply asking them what their hobbies are and going from there.

I’ve always found it interesting to ask elders about their pasts. Ask questions and learn a little about how the world was when they were your age. If you care for an elder in a nursing home, take the fun to them. Take board games along with you or perhaps a photo album that you could share with them. Find out if their room in the nursing home has a DVD player and take along some movies.

When I took care of an elderly woman, I would sometimes take my dog along and the woman loved my dog. Another great idea is you could start your own cook book with the elder you’re taking care of. Maybe they have recipes that have been passed down for generations in their family that you’d love to learn and start making for your own family. All you would need is an empty binder, some loose leaf paper, and a pen. You could even take pictures while you cook up things together and add the pictures to your cook book to remember the fun times you had. No matter what you decide to do, make it memorable. You have no idea how big of an impact you could make on someone’s life.

Now if you are in a position where you cannot look after the elderly, say your aging parents, it’s important to look at getting homestead senior care — a care facility that’s made specifically for seniors. Check out some of our other articles that deal with this topic.
